For testing memory, I would leave out any problems that
could be appearing from an operating system. Read: Do not
use any operating system at all. :-)
The simplest approach is often the most comfortable one
in the case of checking RAM.
For checking memory, use the memtest live CD. You can also
use memtest from UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD) which also contains
other tools that can be used to check for faulty hardware.
In many cases, you can boot those from USB sticks if you
don't have an optical drive or don't want to "waste" a
"precious" media. :-)
