Hardware RAID or software for ZFS

Ok. 

So with SAS disks, I’ll most probably need a controller / HBA with JBOD capabilities ? 
Like that disks will be presented directly to the OS where I’ll handle the RAIDZ as needed. 

Is that correct ? 

Or is there any other « native » option ?
