It sounds like you'd be happier with PC-BSD: http://iso.cdn.pcbsd.org/10.0-RELEASE/amd64/PCBSD10.0-RELEASE-x64-DVD-USB-latest.iso
PC-BSD is a desktop-focused version of FreeBSD with a lot of cool features. FreeBSD itself primarily targets servers (which is why it doesn't come with a gui by default), so you may have a better experience with PC-BSD.
