It is also important to fix the right one problem at a time. I had
deferred dealing with what turned out to be a memory issue as I dealt
with other stuff, hence the mess I have/had found myself in.

But yes, fixing the corruption in the filesystem seems to have helped
(see the note I sent a few minutes ago).
