BASE ncurses vs devel/ncurses

no one ... ? is there really no way to force a port to compile against
BASE ncurses when devel/ncurses is installed?

I tried with USE= ncurses:base (after I discovered
/usr/ports/Mk/Uses/ncurses.mk) but it doesn't seems to work ...
