What is the "thinnest" display manager available?

Many display managers (such as GDM and KDM) have a setting
ready for /etc/rc.conf, but XDM still seems to work fine with
this method. The FreeBSD Handbook (6.6.2.) mentions the adding
of an entry to /etc/ttys, which I'm following for years now if
I want to use xdm and wdm.

Allow me to ask the following question:

Is xdm (and as far as I know, also wdm) still an exception
from the "rc.conf rule", or how is it supposed to be started
on "more modern" versions?
