I have never built Xorg. My technique has also been to try HAL and turn if off
if required. So when/if it does not work:
#hald_enable="YES" ==> /etc/rc.conf
#dbus_enable="YES"
Option "AutoAddDevices" "false" ==> /etc/X11/xorg.conf
