PHP upgrade fails

I made some progress but still

php -v
PHP Warning:  Module 'pdf' already loaded in Unknown on line 0
PHP 5.3.2 with Suhosin-Patch (cli) (built: May 21 2010 01:21:41)

Zend Engine v2.3.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2010 Zend Technologies

Even after restarting apache php-based pages do not load. Many thanks
