Is there a way to compare what is in the ports tree with what is installed?

Try running the pkg_version(1) utility.  For instance, running it here,
I can see output like this:

        ksh$ pkg_version | grep -v '=$'
        ORBit2                              <
        aalib                               <
        [...]
