Any way to probe snd card?

A cat /dev/sndstat says that my old AWE64 is there. (I'm
doing a make kernel now; be done wee-hours?!) Anyway a
kldload [sound|snd_sb16] and the tiny red x is beside the
spkr in the upper right. Still head-scratching.
Anybody else know what's going on?
