If you're running 5.x-STABLE, then OpenBSD's CARP has been ported. See:
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=pfsync&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=FreeBSD+6.0-current&format=html
(Yes, I know that man page is from 6-CURRENT. They don't seem to have
5-STABLE manpages up on the site right now.)
