thanks T,

I followed your steps to the tee and still no go. I do have a php.ini in /usr/local/etc however and it appears to be picking up my include_path.

  I just got done installing Horde/IMP and I hate to tell you but
php.ini doesen't even exist. From the looks of it the ports people
got together and worked out an alternative way of specifying variables
for php instead of using php.ini. Probably to avoid the problems
that you mentioned of ports overwriting php files.

so what is this alternative way? i have to include some other paths...

   #############################################

   LoadModule  php4_module         libexec/apache2/libphp4.so

   DirectoryIndex index.php index.html  index.htm

   #############################################

   If you are using apache2 that is.. for apa libexec/apache13 or libexec/apache

   It would help to make sure you have define

   #############################################

   application/x-httpd-php       &   application/x-httpd-php-source  phps

   Be sure and restart apache and clear your trying to load the page/site again.. let me know your results

     T,
     thank you for all the info! it has been a learni my php.conf file shows:

     PHP_EXT_DIR=200204     PHP_PORT=${PORTSDIR}/lang/php4
     PHP_SAPI=full
     which  jives with the pkg_info;

     Is your pcre extension still: php4-pcre-4.3.9 ?
     If so, try and rebuild ..
     make  distclean
     make config
     make install
     double check your php.c make sure that lib directory exists under /usr/local/lib/php
     pcre.so should be in that directory.. if for need to manually remove the older version..
     Hope this     T
