Hi Andreas:

I have faced some of the issues that you mention with 
  KDE 3.3
  FireFox 1.0.4
  Linux kernel 2.6.9-5 and 
  xorg-x11-6.8.1-23

However, I am still learning the ropes on FreeBSD and 
so unable to repro your observation on a FreeBSD machine.
