After some googling, I found the following solution:
1. cd /usr/ports/databases/mysql323-client
2. rm -rf work
3. make extract
4. vi work/mysql-3.23.56/config
find longlong.
in the function that follows, change close to fclose.
save file.
5. make
6. make install
works like a champ. Seems to be a bug in the config script.
