failed php4 install...can't figure this one out

You are wrong all the way. Pleas don't FUD people if you have no clue.
Take a look at the Makefile first.

I doubt, but for the OP:
- uname -a
- date of last cvsup for ports, and the tag from cvsup file
- cat /var/db/ports/php4/options
