That depends on which version of FreeBSD you're running. On earlier
versions you had to reboot. More recent versions can recover by
themselves. In case of doubt, stop X and restart it.
This normally happens when you lose a number of interrupts, either
because the system is overloaded or because you disconnected the
mouse. In the latter case, "don't do that, then". In the former
case, if you find the mouse is reacting very sluggishly, usually an
indication of heavy interrupt load, don't use it until the interrupt
load drops a bit.

Was it also the night before the full moon? There are all sorts of
coincidences. But the monitor frequency doesn't have anything to do
with this problem.
