kdm on bootup

No - did you also change "off" to "on"?  Tell your kernel to reread
/etc/ttys (among others):

 # kill -HUP 1

and, provided you got your command line right, {k,x}dm will start.
Your character terminals will still be available by hitting CTRL-ALT-Fn.
