Is it neccessary for sending mail from php ?

Hello,

   I've install apache+php and would like to use
function:mail() in php to sendmail from my
box(Freebsd). My question is, is it neccessary to
run sendmail or other SMTP-like service on this box 
for able to send (outgoing) mail.
