This is really a MySQL question,
But you need to GRANT the user you created permissions to use the
MYSQL database. Use the root user to do the grant.

Get Paul Dubois' excellent book. MySQL Second Edition ( Sams
Publishing). It's great!
Also try mysql at lists.mysql.com
