/dev/snd0 and devfs???

I have a SND Blaster 16 in my computer. I was using FreeBSD 4.8 and
'device pcm' in my kernel config file, worked great. I've completely
re-installed with 5.1R and recompiled my kernel with 'device pcm'.
Unfortunately sound doesn't work.
I no longer have a /dev/snd0 device... how do I make devices in
5.1R??? MAKEDEV is no longer available... and section 9.5 of the
FreeBSD manual says: "If you are running FreeBSD 5.0 or later you can
safely skip this section. These versions use devfs(5) to allocate device
nodes transparently for the user"
What do I do?
important dmesg stuff:
sbc0: <Creative ViBRA16X> at port 0x388-0x38b,0x300-0x301,0x220-0x22f
irq 7 drq 1,0 on isa0
pcm0: <SB16 DSP 4.16 (ViBRA16X)> on sbc0
anything that looks sound related in my /dev tree:
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 30, 4 Aug 19 10:12 /dev/audio0.0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 30, 0x00010004 Aug 19 10:12 /dev/audio0.1
cr--r--r-- 1 root wheel 30, 6 Aug 18 12:23 /dev/sndstat
