I'm not sure if it was FLAVOR that solved this, but it is solved.

$ pkg info -x ipython
py36-ipython-5.3.0_2
py36-ipython_genutils-0.2.0
$ pkg info -xl ipython | grep bin
        /usr/local/bin/iptest
        /usr/local/bin/iptest3
        /usr/local/bin/ipython
        /usr/local/bin/ipython3

IPython still cannot be installed concurrently for multiple versions of python,
but that's a separate problem.
