One thing I forgot to mention is that partly in reaction to this report
lang/gcc44 is now unconditionally using devel/binutils since mid February,
as lang/gcc45 had been doing before.
Also, I am in the process of moving USE_FORTRAN=yes from GCC 4.4 to
GCC 4.5 and expect that the later will gradually become the "default"
version of USE_GCC.
