I like the use and behaviour of PYTHON_VERSION, I've discussed this with 
vsevolod in Plone pr 
(http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=ports/86451), maybe he is also 
working at the same patch for bsd.python.mk.

btw Zope 3.1 is in ports, so it should be also included for selection.
