Sorry,

I should have included it. I wrote that quite late after a lot of
hair-pulling-out.

I will post the full log when I get home, but the gist of it is

Could not load glx (module does not exist)
Could not load kbd (module does not exist)
(... etc for mouse, dri, dri2, every module I built, except for nv- if that's
relevant)

Followed by

FATAL: No screens found.
