If you are installing a recent FreeBSd (I used 9.0-RC2) the FreeBSD installer should take care of partitioning
free space, including a boot partition (apple-boot) with the boot loader.
Automatic partitioning didn't work for me, so I used manual instead. worked for me, YMMV.
One small caveat: gpart is currently unable to create a slice 4 ("ada0s4") on my iBook hard drive, the reason for that is
currently unknown.
