It runs OS X, but I have had a couple of freezes, and one kernel panic.
so now I am running ASD (Apple System Diagnostics) to verify the
hardware.

Yes, if ASD doesn't find anything, I'm going to look at the memory
DIMMs. This particular model has four DIMM slots (not eight) and they
must be installed in pairs. But still, I should be able to take out two
of the DIMMS and see if that changes anything. Then swap then, and so
on.
