Which port are you talking about by the way?

This worked for me just fine in the past (placed in make.conf):

  DEFAULT_VERSIONS+=ssl=libressl

for LibreSSL and

  DEFAULT_VERSIONS+=ssl=openssl

for openssl from ports.
