I'm going to answer in reverse!

Do you have a spare HDD? Even old, out-dated or temporarily borrowed? Just hit that spare HDD with 10.1, linux-c6 and whatever else as trial. Why? Because,
* new_xorg is now default in ports (you probably have old xorg)
* many previous make.conf settings are now out-dated and you need to review /usr/ports/Mk/*. Sorry, just part of life.
* why www/linux-firefox instead of just plain www/firefox? Your question is by default based on the perspective of older ports incompatibility work-arounds.
* desktop users must keep their systems much more current than server systems, because the graphics environment improves at a much faster pace than server-side.

Your description is mostly true. pkgng is now the norm and portupgrade/portmaster run into problems with higher versions. If you take the leap to >10, make sure you understand pkgng repos or/and poudriere.

Had a similar (?) mmeory problem with all mozilla-based ports (but non linux-*):
http://freebsd.1045724.n5.nabble.com/shmget-No-space-left-on-device-issue-with-firefox-td5938162.html
The problem is cleared now and although not working perfectly, at least I have some measure of sanity. The solution had nothing to do with memory, it was a ports issue.

If a certified idiot like me has it working on 11, you can probably feel confident about trying on 10.1

The forums are active again, so I'll see you around...
