This sounds like the same problem I had. It went away when I cleaned
out /usr/local.
Note that the /usr/local I had was a result of installing from the
8.2-release DVD (followed by however many port upgrades that did
whatever they did, before it reached a failure point, in my case in
packagekit).
This implies that something is probably busted on the DVD image(s) somewhere.
