If your system is configured to use csup (or cvsup) to update your ports
tree to the latest (ports-all tag=.), then you can fetch a pre-built
index with "make fetchindex".

portsnap(8) updates the INDEX as well as the ports tree by default and
might be a better solution for you.

The Handbook article on portsnap includes details on running portsnap
from cron:
