Just one suggestion: in the <link> could you add an anchor with
the date, eg
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/~checkout~/ports/UPDATING?rev=HEAD#20050622
                                                                        ^^^^^^^^^

That would help to detect the last read news, even if this anchor
does not exist in the target document.
