I have committed the changes I was talking about to `env' in
6.x-current, including an update to the man page which tries
to describe it all.  Let me know if you think anything more
is needed.

Right now I have no definite plans to MFC these changes, but
that's mainly because I would probably need to rewrite the man
page with different examples under release 5.x, and I'm not
exactly eager to do that.  Ports-people, let me know if an MFC
(to 5.x) would be worthwhile.
