mixing portupgrade with sysinstall safe?

spadge at tobermory$ pkg_info gcc\*
Information for gcc-3.4.4_20050415:

etc, and it's the only one that shows, and yet gcc -v still says it's 
using an older version.

I'm flumoxed.
