I was getting this same error, but I have CPUTYPE?=athlon-xp in 
my /etc/make.conf. When I commented it out, it built and installed just 
fine. It doesn't appear as if the OP was using that option, so I'm not 
at all sure how helpful this is, but FWIW that's how I solved the 
problem. Maybe got (un)lucky?
