I have no idea what the cause is, that's why I asked.  However, I
don't think it goes back as far as the COMMENT switch.

It could be something entirely unrelated to bsd.port.mk, e.g. higher
process creation overhead etc.  (I'm on 5.0-CURRENT/alpha.)
