Have you tried Removing "OPTIONS_DEFAULT=        GNOMETERMINAL"?

That was what got it working for me. Then "GNOME-Terminal" never got selected.
Of course the "ports db options" file shows NO options selected but at least
removing that statement about allowed me to select MATE and the process then
properly set up the files for "MATE-Terminal".
