This is really just a precaution due to version differences i.e., can be
ignored if no one is willing to test either the fix or the revert. Given
everyone is a volunteer timeouts are very common.

Git hash can be truncated as long as it still points to a unique commit.
Depending on the size of the repo the length is usually between 7 to 12 digits.
I often use 12-digit due to similarity with Mercurial. Hash collision with
other projects is possible but unlikely due to how infrequently such patches
are used.
