Apparently I was wrong.

a) USES=           python3:3.3+   
is wrong and breaks ports.

b) DEFAULT_VERSIONS+= python=2.7 python2=2.7 python3=3.5
works fine. I was resetting it with DEFAULT_VERSIONS=  (no +) further down the
make.conf file.
