Manifests as a failure and core dump by notification-daemon. The actual problem is in x11-toolkits/gtk30.

Evidently a patch has been applied (Aug 2011) upstream but it appears that it has slipped through the net somewhere along the line.

The upstream bug is https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=649588

The patch is http://bugzilla-attachments.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=194938 but does not appear in gtktrayicon-x11.c (gtk-3.0.12_2)

Start notification-daemon in one terminal session.

notify-send hello world in another.

The first session aborts with a critical error and core dumps.
