 One suggestion is to submit a patch with an 'OPTIONS' STATIC_LIBS off
 and some ifdev/ WITH_STATIC_LIBS and post-install?(?) options in 
 Makefile and  some edits to pkg-plist to deal with extra libs.

 make those changes, and submit a patch against originals and lets see if 
 we can't get this submitted.
 that will make these changes optional and upward compatible.
 
 without bumping ports revision, automatic builds won't need to rebuild 
 packages.
