I installed the 8.1-release and then gnome2-lite packages from ftp.freebsd.ch/pub/FreeBSD/ports/amd64/packages/All.  I then upgraged to the full gnome2 packages from the same site.  Whenever I access most any of the menu items I receive the error below.  This specifically occurs when launching the add/remove software and log file viewer menu items. 

The backend exited unexpectedly. This is a serious error as the spawned backend did not complete the pending transaction.
