I just noticed that the first chunk of "patch-message.cpp" in
my suggested upgrade of the port is not correct!

It can cause an uninitialized pointer to be freed in certain
scenarios. Guess, we'll have to live with the memory leak (I'd
rather not try to clean up the code to allow fixing this ...)
