After upgrading to Gnome 2.16 (using portupgrade) the screensaver refuses the correct passwrd with the following line in the /var/log/messages:
gnome-screensaver-dialog: in _openpam_check_error_code(): 
pam_sm_authenticate(): unexpected return value 27
