when I looked at the error more closely, I decided to try a workaround:
cd /usr/X11R6/lib
for i in /usr/local/lib/libgconf-1.*; do ln -s $i ; done
that seems to work. the build completes, anyway. looks like gconf is
installing stuff in places gnome-db doesn't know about.
