scalc crashes when trying to edit cell

Hi,
I hope you can assist me with this problem. Although I can open .xls 
files, if I try to edit a cell, scalc crashes right away and then goes 
into recovery and brings up the file again.

If I run openoffice.org-3 by command line it shows:
Failed to initialize GEM.  Falling back to classic.
