GLib problems with openoffice.org-2.3.1

Building from ports openoffice gives:
(process:46025): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2242: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function

(process:46025): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `initialization_value != 0' failed

(process:46025): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_new: assertion `G_TYPE_IS_OBJECT (object_type)' on attempting 
to open an .ods file from a previous release or after saving a new file and exiting. The application then locks up.


I get the same or similar effect whether building the application from ports or installing a prebuilt package.

The system here:

Am I doing something foolish?
Does anyone know the problem?
Where do I go from here?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
