OO 1.1.4, FreeBSD 5.4, KDE 3.4 cannot copy / paste out

I am running FreeBSD 5.4, with KDE 3.4, where I installed Openoffice 1.1.4. 
I have found that I cannot copy / paste anything out of Openoffice
documents.  For example, I have two spreadsheets that I created graphs in. 
I can copy these graphs only out to the OpenOffice drawing program.  If I
attempt to copy these out to Gimp or KolourPaint, nothing happens.  
Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong?
I have jdk 1.4 installed on this system, and OO was installed with java
support through there.  I attempted to install OO 1.1.5 previously but was
never successful in running it (a configuration file error would come up and
the program would close).
