Configure failure with 5.3-BETA4, OO 1.1.2_1

I'm now pretty sure that this problem is related to another problem on the 
same system, and that both are caused by something in the upgrade to KDE 
3.3 from 3.2 (I couldn't buildworld, either).

(I usually run long compilations in an xterm/konsole shell; trying to run 
"make buildworld" failed in a konsole shell but is working after excaping 
from KDE and running "make buildworld" in a console login shell).
