Because there where coredumps with different versions, even with the one
in the system. Have you tried to compile it with the system gcc ?

You are wrong on this.
OpenOffice1.0 only works with JDK1.3.1. You cannot use JDK 1.4.x with this
version till you fix all the compile errors (and there are many)
OpenOffice1.1 only works with JDK 1.4.X.
