Well, I say I disagree.

For any supported version of FreeBSD 8 will this not be true? "${COMPILER_TYPE}
== gcc && ${COMPILER_VERSION} <= 42"

about about FreeBSD 9?

If those are always true in 100% of the cases, then use the less complex OPSYS
and OSREL which do _not_ require USES+= compiler:features

That was unnecessarily complex for academic releases.  Let's be practical.
